The main thing that made Danny Sprinkle a National Coach of the Year candidate last season at Utah State is that he took a new job and built a conference champion completely from scratch.
Is John Calipari about to do something similar?
Maybe.
The latest nice development for the first-year Arkansas coach came Tuesday when it was announced that Trevon Brazile has removed himself from the transfer portal and will be returning to the SEC program. The 6-foot-10 forward is the first and only player who competed for Eric Musselman last season to announce a return to Arkansas under Calipari. Brazile’s addition to the roster has the Razorbacks up to No. 13 in Version 28 of the 2024-25 CBS Sports preseason Top 25 And 1 college basketball rankings.
Kansas remains No.1.
Brazile started 23 times for Arkansas last season and averaged 8.6 points and 5.9 rebounds in 25.7 minutes per contest. He averaged 11.8 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in 27.1 minutes per contest a season prior before suffering a torn ACL against UNC-Greensboro in December 2022.
Arkansas moving up to No. 13 in the Top 25 And 1 means I now have five SEC schools ranked in the top 15. The others are No. 2 Alabama, No. 10 Auburn, No. 11 Texas A&M and No. 14 Tennessee. At this point, Alabama seems like the obvious favorite in the league. But Nos. 2 through No. 5 are basically interchangeable — and Arkansas should clearly be a part of the conversation as Calipari attempts to rejuvenate his Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame career after leaving Kentucky under pressure following his 15th season with the Wildcats that culminated with a loss to Oakland in the first round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament.
