Sports I've Considered – Cup of Jo

Our summer style icon is Tashi Duncan. By the wonderful Grace Farris.
P.S. Which jeans are cool now, and stuff I just love.

Omg, I genuinely played lacrosse in high school just for the kilts, lol!
Hah, we’re opposites—I pick fencing, Aikido, and ice hockey!
Grace nails it every time! <3
You can just dress like you’re going to play tennis without actually playing it! My summer uniform is a white tennis skort, crop top, Dorsey tennis necklace, big white visor, and Dior sunnies.
Side note, but I decided to start playing golf 2years ago as a 39yo mum of two. Absolutely love spending time outside and my family of two boys decided to join me and now all of us play together most weekends (we play a shorter course of 9 holes and it takes about 2 hours). Oh and yes the outfits can be cute but I’m mostly dressing for comfort 🙂
For some reason, the children’s XL little league tees that I find at the thrift always fit me *perfectly*. Always! This 37 year old probably looks like she’s representing for every niece and nephew’s team in the entire region. Good thing that sportswear is always a vibe.
As a novice golf mom with no athletic clothes/athleisure to speak of, I’ve enjoyed seeing some super cool golf fashion from the moms that seriously play golf who I’ve met on the circuit while they caddy for their kids. Print dresses with pleated skirts, bright socks, classy sun hats. Would I be such a poser if I bought the clothes just to watch the tournaments?
HA! The breton shirt, the pink (oops, sorry, NANTUCKET RED) shorts!!
Also maybe should have gotten in on those spandex volleyball shorts while I was young and hot. worn with oversized crew neck sweater for maximum lady Di impact.
It’s not too late!! 🙂
I have considered moving to Scandinavia, concealing my gender à la Yentl, and devoting myself to becoming a world-class winter athlete in order to suit up with the Norwegian men’s curling team.

OMG Those trousers are amazing! I thought whelp that’s just what curlers wear, then scrolled down to see the Canadian team in normal black trousers. Made it even greater.
I grew up with a mom who, being a child of the 50s, had a lot of straight up fear around her daughters being athletic or participating in sports. (Every person is a mystery, and I’m assuming something bad happened to her and that this was a protective instinct on her part.) I tried a lot of creative solutions for getting to be active while growing up. Maybe my most successful was that I managed to be on my high school’s *badminton* team! For all four years!! And we were good, too! I grew up in the US, where so few schools have teams that one of our rival schools was a feeder for the US Olympic team! My only curse is that I’m now too good at badminton to be up for the American backyard version, but I don’t have enough experience to keep up with friends who grew up in places where it’s a big deal sport.
But! I remember dreaming of wearing a team uniform. My little ninth grade self wanted nothing more than that rite of passage/validation. And you’d better believe I still have the mesh uniform shorts sitting in a box somewhere, twenty years later.
Ruth! I also grew up in the US and played badminton in high school (only 3 years). I just recently got rid of the shorts but still have a top! So good! And so fun! If you believe it I picked a college where I could play and did so for 4 years… that uniform is on a bunny made by my coach! Haven’t played in a while but maybe I should look up local options knowing it would take awhile to get skills back.
Love this!! I started paying tennis and the outfits are so much fun.
I love bowling shoes and the men’s tops!
Grace, would you consider signing your art? I just grabbed a screenshot of it on my phone to text to my friends and realized when I crop it, credit to you is no where to be found. Love your wonderful, gentle observations.
It is signed! Checkout the pickleball lady 🙂
“Farris” is on the pickleball dress! 🙂
She always puts “FARRIS” in her art.
I don’t have a boat, and can’t sail. But sailing clothes…yes yes yes!! Bring on the stripes!
I totally do this! I would add rugby and roller derby.
Hey Jo/team! Have you guys ever considered putting other comics besides Grace’s on Fridays? I love Grace, but notice it’s been her every Friday for a while…I have so many cool female artists on my Instagram that would be awesome to see represented on COJ. Might be cool to rotate and introduce other artists for a chance! Just a thought.
yes we will consider that! we worked with Mari Andrew for a few years, then grace, and we love them both! but yes always so happy to amplify and feature new voices! xoxo
oh that’s a cool idea, I would love to see other female comics too!
Sorry but I don’t think I could start my week-end without Grace! (Though i confess i follow her on Instagram)
I read somewhere this summer style is “tennis-core” I am guessing Challengers has something to do with it!
I am sticking to comfy shorts and baggy t-shirts which are excellent choice for marathons, Netflix marathons that is 😀
lol 😆
Asides from the style (awesome, especially shoes and hairstyles) I loved the movie and can’t stop recommending it to everyone ~ it’s fresh, sexy, relatable.. two hours of energy and chemistry !!
Plus, six words to tell your kids.
“Fifteen minutes later, we were sitting down to a warming tangle of linguini.”
Including a parenting tip and the best swimsuit cover-up.
I bring these four things every time.
