NFL Draft recap
Baylor is losing a lot from this past season’s team — specifically four of the top five scorers, including projected first-round NBA Draft picks Ja’Kobe Walter and Yves Missi. It was fair to wonder exactly how coach Scott Drew would respond.
Now we have our answer.
Drew responded by adding two fifth-year players who have both been starters on Final Four teams. First, last month, Baylor secured a commitment from Jeremy Roach, who started 108 games at Duke over the past four years and helped the Blue Devils make the 2022 Final Four. Then, on Sunday, the Bears secured a commitment from Norchad Omier, who started 67 games at Miami over the past two years and helped the Hurricanes make the 2023 Final Four. Those two newcomers will likely start alongside five-star freshman VJ Edgecombe and returning double-digit scorers Langston Love and Jayden Nunn. That’s a strong first five that has the Bears up to No. 6 in Version 20.0 of the 2024-25 CBS Sports preseason Top 25 And 1.
Kansas remains No. 1.
Omier was the highest-ranked available player in David Cobb’s transfer portal rankings before he committed to Baylor this weekend. The 6-foot-7 forward averaged 17.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals in 30.6 minutes per game this season at Miami. In four years of college basketball — the first two at Arkansas State, the second two at Miami — the 22 year-old Nicaraguan has never not averaged at least 12.6 points and 10.0 rebounds in the same season.
The only other developments that impacted Version 20.0 of the Top 25 And 1 are Gonzaga securing a commitment from Arkansas transfer Khalif Battle and Arkansas securing a commitment from Kentucky transfer Adou Thiero. The Zags and Razorbacks are No. 7 and No. 23, respectively, in the Top 25 And 1.
