Baltimore City leaders are taking a different approach to offer more opportunities for students.
Mayor Brandon Scott and Baltimore City Schools CEO Sonja Santelises announced an expanded middle school athletics program Tuesday.
The program features new partnerships with independent vendors, each of them specializing in a different sport.
“Through sports, you grow as an individual, you grow as a group of people. We have to continue to allow our young people to have access so they can grow into the best version of themselves,” Scott said.
Officials said city schools expanded athletics programming this school year, offering cross country, flag football, bocce, volleyball, basketball and track and field. Sports like rowing and golf could be added in the district’s latest expansion.
School leaders said student feedback was a key factor in determining which programs to include.
