Saturday Sports: High school hoops is the name of the game – WWNY

WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – High school hoops was the name of the game this Saturday with a number of contests on the schedule on both the boys’ and girls’ sides.
We begin on the boys’ side at JCC, where the Potsdam Sandstoners made the trip down Route 11 to meet the Sackets Harbor Patriots in a Frontier League-NAC battle.
In the 1st quarter, Steven Yoakum spots up and hits the 3: Potsdam up 3.
Then it was Ian VanWagner grabbing his own miss and connecting: Sandstoners by 7.
The Patriots answer. It’s Jake Peters coming up with the miss, laying in 2 and drawing the foul: Patriots down 3.
Peters then stops and pops in the lane. Sackets Harbor is still down 3.
Off the inbounds, Austin Griner lays in 2: Sackets Harbor down 1.
Theodore Hughes goes up strong in the paint and finds the mark.
Sackets Harbor nips Potsdam 54-51
In NAC Boys’ Basketball at SUNY Canton, Edwards-Knox met Madrid-Waddington.
It was Jacob Mayette from the arc – Boom! Jackets within one.
Then it was Brady Butler to Dawson Matthews for the backdoor: 16-15 Edwards Knox.
Next, it was Butler to the hoop for two of his own.
Cole Smith, against a triple-team, still sinks the shot. The Jackets lead 20-19.
Then it was Smith to Ryan Mayette for the layup.
Jake Mayette pulls up and connects on the fall-away shot and Madrid leads 26-21.
Then it was Weston Kitzman to Ryan Mayette. Tyree Hawkins cleans up the miss.
Madrid-Waddington beats Edwards-Knox 45-40.
Also in NAC Boys’ Basketball, it was Hermon-DeKalb hosting Parishville-Hopkinton.
Emerson McQuaide wraps around a pass to Noah Locy for the basket.
Gavin Walrath kicks out to McQuaid who splashes the three.
Hunter Bouchey slashes to the glass for two.
Nate Phippen rolls off the screen and drills the three-pointer.
Then it was Phippen to Ethan Pelligrino. He also connects from the Land of Three.
Next, it was Walrath to McQuaid who worms through for the layup.
Michael Maurer fires the initial shot and Noah Friot puts away the rebound.
Hermon-DeKalb defeats Parishville-Hopkinton 67-41.
In Adams, a boys’ non-league matchup as South Jeff hosted Syracuse Institute of Technology.
In the 1st quarter, Regan Lawlee buries the 3 ball to put the Spartans on top 1.
It’s Lawlee again from downtown as South Jeff ups its lead to 4.
Robert Piddock hits the tough shot in the paint to put South Jeff in front 5.
Liam Hobbs gets loose inside for the lay-in: South Jeff by 2.
Then it’s Piddock using the glass for the basket, but Syracuse I.T. beats South Jeff 57-39.
Turning to girls’ action, Indian River hosted Cortland in a non-league matchup in Philadelphia.
In the 1st quarter, Michaela Delles tickles twine on the 3: Indian River up 2.
Then it was Delles with the rebound and putback as Indian River expands its lead to 4.
Off the inbounds, Delles lays in 2 of her team high 18.
Ravan Marsell goes baseline and drops the floater: Indian River by 6.
In the 2nd quarter, Bella Davis nails the 3: Indian River up 13.
Indian River rolls past Cortland 48-26.
On the ice, a top 5 battle in Hamilton as 4th ranked Colgate hosted 5th ranked Clarkson.
In the 1st period, Clarkson gets on the board when Dominique Petrie finds the mark: Clarkson on top 1-0.
That would be all the scoring as Clarkson goalie Michelle Pasiechnyk would stop all 35 shots she faced.
Clarkson blanks Colgate 1-0.
Down the road in Ithaca, a top 10 battle as 9th ranked Cornell hosted 10th ranked St. Lawrence
In the 2nd period, St. Lawrence was down 2-1 when Anna Segedi lights the lamp on a power play tally: 2-1 Cornell.
Cornell holds on to beat St. Lawrence 3-1.
