Claudia’s Sports Pub, a beloved neighborhood sports bar that held down its spot on Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard for 65 years, will close after serving on Monday, Oct. 9, the bar announced this week.
In a message posted to social media late Thursday, owner Martin Spathas wrote that the closure came with “mixed emotions.”
“It has been a privilege to be a part of the community all these years,” Spathas wrote. “While this difficult decision marks the end of an era, the spirit of Claudia’s will live on in Portland lore. The stories, bonds, and history made within these walls will never be forgotten.”
Claudia’s, which plans to “announce the new business that will occupy our building in the next few weeks,” was named Portland’s best sports bar by The Oregonian/OregonLive readers in a 2016 poll.
First established by Gene and Claudia Spathas in 1958, Claudia’s was designed “as a total concept,” according to the bar’s website, with a warm and friendly atmosphere, a wide-ranging menu of burgers and other tavern fare and a full bar where you could usually find a good IPA from the likes of Breakside or some other top Portland brewery.
The signature swiveling captain’s chairs disappeared nearly a decade ago, but Claudia’s was still a great place to watch sports, with plenty of screens ringing the two-sided bar, a fireplace in the main dining room, pool and poker tables and more.
Claudia’s Sports Pub will host a farewell party from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 3006 S.E. Hawthorne Blvd, claudiaspub.com.
